Study Skills

The wide range of skills required for effective learningincluding test preparation and test-taking skills, memorization, note-taking, reading strategies, planning and prioritizing, and time managementcan be very challenging for students to master, and they are often not taught explicitly in schools. The result is that many students take a very passive approach to studying; they do not interact or engage with the material and therefore do not retain much (or any) of it. A student could spend several hours studying class material, but if they are not using effective study methods, they will find little payoff for their time and effort. We coach students not to work harder, but to work differently. This means students will learn how to incorporate multi-sensory methods into their studying, use the best strategies for their unique learning style, manage their time and planning for maximum retention of material, and develop tools and systems they can apply to a variety of types of assignments and assessments. With coaching, modeling, repetition, and independent practice, our students become active and engaged learners who study more effectively and efficiently.

For students needing more specialized support, we also offer executive functioning tutoring and ADHD coaching, and all of our tutors have a background in special education and are equipped to work with students with mild to moderate special needs. We also serve as educational advocates to help parents navigate the process of getting an IEP or a 504.
