Middle School Tutoring

Middle school is a time of intense transition for most students. There is an increase in the number of courses and teachers that a student will encounter in a given day as they enter sixth grade, and just a few short years later, they move into high school. The expectations for organizing materials, managing time, and working independently with more rigorous content and skills can often leave students feeling lost or behind. Our tutors facilitate successful middle school transitions for the youngest students, and build crucial academic and social emotional skills for older students as they prepare to transition to high school. Each session is built with the individual student’s needs at the center and targets a particular skill using the content that students are learning at school. Many teachers and parents emphasize the importance of building the following skills:

  • Creating organization systems for physical materials
  • Developing a system of tracking and completing assignments
  • Following a schedule of class transitions
  • Monitoring and taking responsibility for grades
  • Self-advocacy
  • Recognizing limitations and seeking support resources

Our work with students to build these skills helps ensure a successful middle school experience and a smooth transition to high school.

TESTIMONIAL

“I’ve always been highly impressed by the rigor and cohesion of Eliza’s curriculum work. The units and lessons she designs are intellectual and engaging for her students, and highlight her instructional leadership. That’s just one reason I’ve been so pleased for Eliza to work as a coach with our aspiring teachers at Boston University.”

-Scott Seider, Associate Professor of Education, Boston University
